If you own a registered car without insurance you will get your license suspended as well as your registration. You should get a warning from DMV but I never did. I found out my license was suspended when I got stopped for speeding.

It’s mandatory to have liability coverage in any state

In New York State the answer is 110% yes. They are one of the best at enforcing mandatory insurance. A friend some years ago simply mailed in his payment late and his insurance lapsed for 24 hours. Since he did not surrender his tags prior to the insurance lapse as I remember it he got a heavy fine and a 30 day license suspension even though he had insurance the next day.
